Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews
Vocalist / Balladeer of Scotish Songs

Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews professional acting and singing career spans more than twenty years and includes performances with Hope Repertory Theatre (MI), Lyric Stage (TX), Dallas Opera (TX), Chautauqua Festival Theatre (NY) and John Houseman’s the Acting Company (NY), among others.  Some of Gaitley’s roles have included Martin in A Grand Night for Singing, Randy Curtis in Lady in the Dark (dir. Jack Lee), Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, Adam in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Georg in She Loves Me, Oscar in Sweet Charity, and Bruce in On the Twentieth Century.  Gaitley was also honored to have created the role of Allen Poole in the world premier of Ed Dixon’s Cather County under the direction of Drew Scott Harris.

Gaitley’s rich baritone voice and ease on stage has earned him high praise from critics and audiences.  In reviewing Cather County Perry Stewart with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram states, “The best voices in director Drew Scott Harris’ uniformly fine cast belong to Diane Guthrie, as the lonely opera singer, and to Gaitley Mathews as the moonshiner Allen Poole.  If this production were distilled into one zenith of a musical moment, it would be when Mathews sings Out Here in the Woods.” In another production, Mark Lowry, also with the Star-Telegram states, “No matter where he is onstage, he’s the dominant presence,” and, Chris Shull with The Met Newspaper highlights Gaitley acting prowess in a production of Sweet Charity when he states, “Gaitley Mathews is Charity’s nemesis throughout the evening, playing with equal sagacity both the movie star Vittorio Vidal and the neurotic Oscar Lindquist.  As the former, he interrupts the show’s second well-know tune, Charity’s soft-shoe “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” with charming sophistication and, most importantly, a consistent Italian accent.”

In addition to his stage work, Gaitley is often called on as a soloist for concerts and musical reviews and most recently has been developing a new show titled “Two Men in Skirts – A Journey Through Scotland in Song and Story.”  Featuring many favorite ballads, Gaitley teams up with pianist Jim Stevenson-Mathews in bringing to life the history of the region.  For more information on “Two Men In Skirts” see tab at right or e-mail Purple Thistle Productions at purplethistlepro@aol.com
